Salsa dancing has its roots in Latin America but is
constantly evolving due to influences from a host of other
cultures and dance forms. Of late, Salsa dancing has become
a global phenomenon.
Salsa is danced in at least 80 different countries and
practically all over East Asia. The most popular style of
Street Salsa danced all over the world would be the cross-
body lead style, also know as the LA Style of Salsa dancing.
Though in recent years, the New York Style of Salsa dancing
(also known as On 2) has gaining popularity throughout the
world due to its groovy feel.
Salsa is a couple dance in which there is a lead and a follow. Usually the male is the lead, while the lady is the follow. The dance is not choreographed, meaning that there isn't a sequence of moves that you must do. Rather, it allows for freedom of expression of the individual.
The Salsa dance is very much a social dance. On any given night at a Salsa club, a guy can ask any lady for a dance, even though it maybe the first time they've met. The guy should be able to lead the lady into just about any move that she can follow. Therefore, there is no need for a fixed partner to dance salsa.
