Suman |
Suman is a talented Salsa dancer, instructor, choreographer and performer. He started dancing in 2001 and gained popularity in a very short time due to his speed of learning and the pace in which he garnered his Salsa achievements.
Eight months after Suman took his first Salsa class, he managed to sweep the Championship title for the 'Singapore Salsa Competition 2002'. In 2003, he extended his winning streak to clinch the much-coveted Champion's trophy in the 'Malaysia Open Salsa Competition'. Suman
gained international exposure by representing Singapore in
performing at the prestigious Annual West Coast Los Angeles
Salsa Congress 2003. |
In 2004, Suman set up his own Salsa school with the objective of taking the Singapore Salsa scene to greater heights. In a short span of eight months of instructing, he groomed students who have gone on to top the 'Singapore Salsa Competition 2004'.
Since then, Suman has been invited to conduct Salsa workshops and perform at Salsa Congresses and Festivals throughout Asia.
This includes the inaugural “Thailand Salsa Festival 2004”, “India Salsa Festival 2005”, the first annual Philippines Salsa Congress and the “Hong Kong Salsa Festival 2006”. Suman also has his fair share of media attention. He has choreographed Salsa and Rueda performances for Arts Central and Mediacorp 5. He has given celebrities Salsa crash courses for filming and photographic purposes. With his gift in choreography, Suman believes in constantly pushing the boundaries to add an element of novelty in his performances. This experimental nature gave birth to
the signature style of refreshing and creative performances
by Dance Unlimited.
In class, Suman is known for the precision in which he breaks down the technical aspect of dancing. He believes that his students should not walk out of his class with questions unasked or with mistakes uncorrected. He will painstakingly guide his students till every last one of them gets their steps right. However, his classes are not serious or stressful. On the contrary, Suman’s classes are always interspersed with his students’ laughter.
On the dance floor, Suman is reputed to be one of the clearest leads around. He is also known for distinct style of dancing. Despite his fancy moves, he always takes the time to dance with the shyest of beginners. They say the best reflection of a man’s lead is the look on his partner’s face. The ladies whom Suman dance with never finish a dance without a smile on their faces.
Suman’s most rewarding Salsa experience was having a chance to perform for KK Hospital’s terminally-ill children.
